Context

SteadyFit is a conceptual digital fitness application designed to help active gym-goers consistently build, track, and manage their workout routines. Created as an intensive UX design sprint project, SteadyFit addresses a common industry challenge: complex, overcrowded interfaces that create cognitive friction during workouts. Inspired by competitor analyses of platforms like Planet Fitness, Nike Training Club, and MyFitnessPal, the app strips away unnecessary clutter in favor of minimalism, and simplified features to provide a fast and streamlined user experience for gym-goers.

Scope

As the sole UX/UI Designer on this sprint, I led the end-to-end product design process from initial research through high-fidelity prototyping.

Bloated Interfaces, Broken Consistency: The Current Fitness App Landscape

Problem

Many gym-goers struggle to stay consistent with their fitness and nutrition routines—not because of a lack of personal motivation, but because the digital tools built to support them create unnecessary mental friction. When users open an app on the gym floor or in the middle of meal prep, they need fast, low-effort execution. Instead, mainstream fitness applications bombard users with bloated feature sets, multi-click pathways, and visually chaotic interfaces. This high cognitive load quickly leads to frustration, task abandonment, and high drop-off rates.

Competitor Breakdown: Where Existing Apps Fail

  • Overcomplicated Workflows & Deep Menus: Instead of allowing fast log-in and tracking, platforms bury primary actions under layers of secondary content.

  • Intrusive Visual Noise: Ads, promotional banners, social feeds, and irrelevant metrics flood the display, overwhelming the screen when users just need clear, quick guidance.

  • Frustrating Onboarding & Navigation Friction: Unreliable layouts, broken syncing, and unintuitive navigation force users to spend more time fighting the app than completing their workouts.

Capturing the wants and needs of a Gym-Goer

Process

The beginning of developing a High fidelity prototype for the SteadyFit brand started off with extensive UX research. I gathered three gym going individuals to interview on their experience with competitor apps: Planet Fitness, Nike Training Club, and MyFitnessPal.

After hearing their grievances, I learned that users drop-off happened for key specific reasons, the apps cognitive load, a hard to navigate UI, and lack of flexibility in making plans. I made a User persona and User Flow to better grasp the target user and how I’ll design my wireframes around that. I then gathered the same gym goers to do some usability testing on my LoFi protoypes, and after some feedback from the tests, with added feedback from my mentor, I tweaked the design to better suit the platform screens they’ll each be on, IOS, Mobile, and Desktop.

Solution

Streamlining the Experience: Minimalist UI Built for the Gym Floor

For the Home screens on the IOS and Mobile Prototypes, I fixed a flaw brought up from feedback which is cleaning up the UI layout and navigation. Labeling the IOS navigation bar icons helps direct users to screens they want to go without any guesswork on any confusing icon. For the Mobile Site prototype the navigation was collapsed into a dropdown menu to save on space for other features to be visible. Both UIs utilize avoid over-cluttering by removing any distracting background images, a change made through extensive feedback from users and my mentor.

Analytics Screen

The Analytics screen bridges the gap between passive logging and actionable fitness behavior by consolidating critical health metrics into a singular, high-visibility dashboard. Rather than forcing users to navigate disjointed menus, the design centralizes daily calorie intake, body weight fluctuations, and macronutrient targets into an intuitive interface. To foster long-term retention and combat user burnout, the screen features an interactive weekly progress chart that visualizes trends over time, transforming raw numbers into meaningful progress indicators. By prioritizing clear information architecture and reducing cognitive load, the Analytics module empowers users to evaluate their daily habits, adjust their routines in real-time, and stay consistently accountable to their personal goals.

Nutrition Screen

The redesign of the Nutrition screen focuses on eliminating friction at the exact moment users need efficiency most: during or immediately after their workouts. By replacing a multi-step logging process with a streamlined, one-tap entry system, the new flow drastically reduces the time required to track daily intake.

Fitness enthusiasts often abandon nutrition tracking not from a lack of discipline, but because high-friction interfaces interrupt their routine. Traditional multi-screen flows demand deliberate mental energy—energy better spent focusing on training. By stripping away superfluous confirmation screens and consolidating search and logging into a unified workspace, the updated interface lowers the user's cognitive load. This immediate, low-effort interaction allows gym-goers to maintain precise meal plans and adjust targets on the fly without breaking their momentum, turning a historically tedious task into a seamless, automatic habit.

Reflecting on the Iterative Design Process

Key Takeaways and Reflection

Through this iterative design process, my primary realization was that efficiency and ergonomics are non-negotiable for active users during a workout. Fitness applications shouldn't compete for a user's attention—they should facilitate it. By designing single-tap actions and automated logging systems, I learned how significantly lowering cognitive friction during rest intervals improves both app adoption and the physical workout experience.

Given more time, I would focus on elevating the high-fidelity prototype by introducing on-demand video demonstrations for exercise execution. Adding interactive form-guide visual support would directly address the needs of beginner users, providing real-time assistance without cluttering the primary workout tracking flow.
