Context
Nearby Buy is a hyper-local e-commerce concept designed to streamline peer-to-peer buying and selling. Inspired by platforms like Facebook Marketplace, the project was created to address common industry friction points—such as unvetted listings, flawed user feedback systems, and low-trust buyer-seller interactions.
Scope
As the UX/UI Designer, I managed the end-to-end product strategy and interface design under a streamlined timeline. My core focus was translating key features standard to local marketplace apps into an elevated, user-centered experience. Starting with rapid low-fidelity wireframing to map out essential user flows, I quickly iterated toward a high-fidelity prototype designed to maximize transaction speed, improve search functionality, and foster community trust.
Problem: Erosion of Trust in Peer-to-Peer E-Commerce
Marketplaces like Facebook Marketplace have become essential local trade hubs, yet systemic usability and operational breakdowns have degraded user trust across the buyer-seller ecosystem:
Unvetted Listings & Rampant Fraud: A lack of robust identity and item verification protocols exposes users to frequent phishing scams, fake tracking numbers, and counterfeit listings—creating high financial anxiety for buyers.
Flawed Review Logic & Falsified Ratings: Legacy platforms allow non-transacting users to leave vindictive profile ratings after minimal chat exchanges. This easily manipulated feedback loop ruins legitimate seller reputations while failing to expose actual bad actors.
Absence of Human Support & Accountability: When fraudulent transactions or account locks occur, users are met with automated bot responses rather than human customer service, leaving both buyers and sellers with zero recourse or protection.
These core issues result in high user drop-off, prolonged transaction times, and a pervasive lack of trust that undermines the core value of local peer-to-peer commerce.
“I got shadowbanned out of nowhere after selling a table. My Marketplace access was completely removed, stating I violated community standards, but giving zero explanation. Appealing does nothing except send back an automated bot response 3 seconds later saying the decision is final
”
Process
To ensure Nearby Buy felt immediately familiar to users, I adopted a research-led, iterative design approach focused on intuitive interaction patterns:
Pattern Mapping & Low-Fidelity Wireframing:
I analyzed established visual hierarchies across major platforms like Facebook Marketplace and eBay. Rather than reinventing the wheel with unconventional layouts that increase cognitive friction, I leveraged mental models users already possess. I sketched low-fidelity wireframes that prioritized spatial clarity, predictable content placement, and clear conversion paths.
High-Fidelity Prototyping & Layout Architecture:
Translating wireframes into interactive high-fidelity screens, I focused on structural alignment and clear visual hierarchy. I crafted consistent component layouts for product cards, navigation bars, and search filters to ensure the interface felt stable and effortless to browse.
Targeted Usability Testing & Refinement:
Due to project timeline constraints, I conducted a focused usability evaluation targeting navigation fluency and layout readability. Qualitative feedback revealed minor visual alignment inconsistencies and component spacing issues. I systematically addressed these UI bugs, polishing the spacing, alignment, and interactive states for the final design deliverables.
Solutions
Designed with spatial clarity in mind, the Feed page elevates high-intent item metadata—including clear pricing, distance metrics, and thumbnail previews—to help users evaluate listings at a glance. An integrated category dropdown allows buyers to filter by specific needs instantly, eliminating endless scrolling and reducing time-to-conversion.
The Account page tackles marketplace fraud head-on by prominent display of identity verification badges, transaction history, and authentic user reviews. It also provides direct, transparent access to customer support and dispute resolution settings, restoring confidence and accountability for both buyers and sellers.
Beyond standard messaging, the Inbox page incorporates dynamic status indicators (such as seller availability and item reserve status) directly into the chat thread. This enables both parties to coordinate meeting locations, verify logistical details, and finalize sales with complete transparency before cash or items exchange hands.
Reflection
This project reinforced the value of designing within established mental models. By implementing industry-standard interaction patterns, I saw firsthand how familiar UI architecture allows users to navigate effortlessly without an onboarding learning curve. Additionally, mastering grid systems and alignment proved essential for establishing visual hierarchy—ensuring dense marketplace metadata remains scannable and easy to digest. Given additional time to expand the project, I would focus on the following design priorities:
Dedicated Customer Support & Dispute Hub: Prototyping a comprehensive, human-centered inquiry page to handle transactional disputes and account issues, directly addressing the lack of support on competing platforms.
Safe Payment Integration: Designing a secure payment flow that holds funds until item handoff is confirmed, further protecting users against common peer-to-peer scams.
Expanded Usability Testing: Conducting multi-user interactive prototype testing to observe live buyer-seller chat interactions and refine edge-case state flows such as cancelled pickups, pending reservations.
